Alexander Blok visited Kyiv in 1907. Here`s what he wrote about Kyiv:
"You can stand in the twilight on the high mountain: on one side - country jail, dig around by the moat. Red moon rises, and sentinels walk. And ahead - high grass ... Behind weeds - all Kyiv amphitheater - white and gold of the churches, while it is not flooded in dusk. And later - Kyiv flies in the lights and far behind the sea of railway electricity and the blue haze. "
Block in Kyiv was charmed by its not typical, casual lines of landscape, which he was able to notice accurately and which in his poetry acquired special expressiveness. He liked the Dnieper most- "Gogol, huge" and "endless railway bridges and steamships"...

I cannot describe you the feeling that came over me at the entrance to the city of my childhood and youth ... If Moscow was a return to Motherland, Kyiv is the return to the paternal home. "
In 1949, in a letter to his wife, too, while being in Kyiv, he wrote:
"I wish I could live and die here. Just here! What a pity that one cannot choose a corner of the earth. What is Moscow for me? I do not love it. I wholeheartedly attached to these stones, which I walked in my youth, rubbing the soles, these century-chestnuts, which were then, and will be there after my death, as candlesticks, as panikadilo! All this is the sacred earth of Motherland! It is a pity that I`m singing in Russian and I am Russian myself! I would have to be Ukrainian singer and sing in Ukrainian! Ukraine - Ridna maty (Ukraine is my Mother) ... Sometimes I think I`m doing a crime not singing for it and on its language! .. "
